Mosaic Mural Project

Clay tile by Donna Mitchelson

I am a contributing artist of the group mosaic mural for the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia. The Mosaic Society of Philadelphia partnered with Perkins Center for the Arts. During the first session, we glued glass tiles onto fiberglass mesh.

Later, I learned that I could sign up for additional ceramic tile making sessions. So I did.

We had to design a tile that had meaning to our life. Therefore I selected one of my photos of a seagull, and etched his image onto a slab of high-fired clay.

I also added additional pieces of clay to give a three dimensional look. I also created a goldfish with a second clay slab.

Then two weeks later, both pieces were fired. Now, it’s time to use underglaze. Ceramic underglazes are pigmented clay that is used for detailed work. A clear glaze is applied when the underglazes are dry.

The completed work will be installed on an exterior wall at Perkins Center for the Arts in Collingswood New Jersey. I can’t wait to see the final project.
